WordPress started in 2003 with a single bit of code to enhance the typography of everyday writing and with fewer users than you can count on your fingers and toes. Since then it has grown to be the largest self-hosted content management system in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.
Everything about WordPress is created for and by the community. WordPress is an Open Source project, which means there are hundreds of people all over the world working on it. (More than most commercial platforms.) WordPress is used by more than 32.8% of the top 10 million websites as of January 2019. WordPress is the most popular content management system (CMS) in use on the Web, at more than 60% market share of CMS sites on the internet. WordPress is the fastest growing CMS, with roughly 500+ new sites being built daily in the top 10 million websites on the web (compared to Shopify’s and Squarespace’s 60-80).
